2000 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon

I'm seriously starting to doubt my ability to sacrifice social engagements for personal betterment. Once again, I missed out on yoga tonight in favor of not one, but two, wine industry events. Clearly I have my priorities straight.

In my defense, by the time I left the office today I was already running late for yoga and I couldn't possibly have made it on time unless I had sped there, which, frankly, is against the law - and I'm not one to break the rules.

So, instead, I made my merry way up valley to St. Helena, detouring in Yountville for a stop at the monthly pool party at Bardessono, an upscale hotel in town. Like every other event here, this one happens regularly, on the third Wednesday of every month (as opposed to the first Friday of every month - Cheers - or the second Thursday of every month - the downtown Napa "Tweet-up").

There I met Ra, both my massage therapist and friend (only in Napa), for a refreshing glass of water. I know, I'm living on the edge. Fortunately, he did not chastise me for missing yoga; however, he did crack my back as we said goodbye (the downside of being friends with your massage therapist).

Shockingly, it has been quite chilly here in Napa for the past two days and so I wasn't really up for a pool party. Naturally, I then made my way to something equally appealing to my vegetarian self: a pig roast.

The roast was taking place at Chase Family Cellars in St. Helena. It wasn't so much the pig (okay, not at all the pig!) that drew me there, but the mingling.

Over a dinner of fruit crisp (thank goodness there was dessert!) I chatted with friends and made some new ones, some of which came from the oh-so-far destination of Calistoga, a town up valley to which I have not yet ventured (but perhaps now will soon). And I enjoyed a glass of Argentinian Malbec while eyeing the lady who took the last bit of the 2000 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon just before I could grab it.

Okay, so probably not the best night for my core and spine. But, I read an article today in the LA Times that said that studies have proven that regular, moderate alcohol consumption results in a longer life and slower cognitive decline. So, really, I'm just looking out for my own health.

Cheers.
